Amedica Patents Ceramic-on-Ceramic Bearings

Amedica Corp. (USA; privately held; 5251R9N7) has been awarded a patent for its unique ceramic-on-ceramic bearings, used in human joint replacements and spinal disc applications.

Amedica said the process produces ultra-low-wear bearing components.

"The combination of high strength and toughness of our silicon nitride ceramics provides us with a unique and versatile surface bearing technology, which offers surgeons wider design choices ... compared to currently available alternate bearing options," said Ashok Khandkar, Vice Chairman and CTO of Amedica.

Full ceramic bearings for traditional industrial applications have been subject to some design and service limitations which have limited their perceived commercial acceptance. Adoption has also been hampered by lingering concerns about in-service life cycle unpredictability and higher potential for shock load damage.

Amedica's patented Si3N4 bearing technology has been suggested as having strong potential to help address the durability issues on a broader scale into the traditional ball and roller bearing industry.
