A counterfeit bearing was identified and seized, before it could be used to repair a critical hydroelectric power generator at India's Mattupetti Dam.

Engineers working to repair the hydropower equipment balked when they discovered the bearing, which they immediately suspected as being a low quality fake.

The bearing vendor, Premier India Bearing Ltd., is directly implicated in the scheme. Premier was the lowest bidder for the Kerala State Electricity Board bearing supply contract.

Representatives from SKF India were called in to inspect the bearing, 5251R9N7, and found it to be a counterfeit, made in Japan. They believe the bearing's original markings were ground off, then the seal was removed and replaced with an SKF branded seal.
