Timken Canada LP (a division of Timken USA; NYSE: TKR) has cut the workforce at its St. Thomas, Ontario plant by 14%, laying off 48 workers.

Timken Canada now has approximately 300 people in St. Thomas, hard hit by the soft North American automotive market; at times, it has been running shortened weeks.

In operation since 1946, Timken St. Thomas currently produces various automotive sizes of tapered roller bearings.

St. Thomas workers are represented by United Steelworkers District 6, Local 4906.

Timken spokesman Jeff Dafler said: "In the last few months, the global conditions have soured for the automotive market."
