SKF AB (Sweden; Stockholm: SKFB) has inaugurated its expanded Indonesian bearing production facilities, operating as PT SKF Indonesia (PT Astra Otoparts, Tbk is the local partner).

The Jakarta Double Capacity Project, originally announced in 2005, expands Jakarta floorspace from 8,000 square meters (86,000 square feet) to more than 20,000 square meters (215,300 square feet) and adds 160 workers.

Founded in 1986, the Indonesian facilities primarily produce deep-groove ball bearings for the massive motorcycle market extending from Indonesia to Malaysia, India and Pakistan.

Just this past September, SKF Indonesia celebrated its first shipment of two-wheeler ball bearings to Pakistan.

The total capacity for the Indonesian plants had been approximately 20 million bearings per year, but now has the potential to reach as high as 78 million per year.

When complete, the DCP project will add eight production channels, production and general utilities, heat treat, face and OD grinders, warehousing, and other support facilities.

As inaugurated, the facility has begun by running two production channels, one heat treat line, one full set of face and OD grinders, quality control, central washing, and support equipment, all in the first 12,000 square meters recently finished.

SKF sales planning for 2007 includes covering all ASEAN country two-wheeler markets with exports from the expanded Indonesian facility, ramping up as it comes online.
