Production in India

Timken India Ltd. (India, a subsidiary of The Timken Company, USA) said it is seriously considering setting up its own manufacturing facility in India to produce needle roller bearings.

At a recent trade show in India, Timken India's Managing Director, Gordon Robinson, commented: "We are currently talking to two-wheeler majors Hero Honda, Suzuki and LML, as well as carmakers Maruti Udyog and Tata Motors for this. A final decision would be taken once we reach critical mass."

A year ago, W.R. "Tim" Timken visited India and declared the company's focus on Asia -- China and India in particular -- would more than quintuple its sales in the region by 2010. Timken plans a combined approach, both selling more products to existing customers and moving into new markets.

India is home to one of the world's largest two-wheeler markets, while also being one of the fastest-growing markets for automobiles and light trucks.

Timken no longer has a needle roller bearing presence in India. Until mid-November, Timken owned 26% of needle roller bearing manufacturer NRB Bearings Ltd., a legacy Torrington joint venture. Timken divested that 2.5 million share ownership to two Sahney family-controlled entities for Rs 230 per share.

If the needle roller bearing project at Timken India is approved, the budget is reportedly in excess of USD $50 million.
