SKF AB (Sweden) and Air France / KLM Group have signed a long term agreement covering
the inspection, repair and overhaul of mainshaft and gearbox bearings for the
General Electric CF6 and CFM56 series of jet engines.
Involved are SKF's Aerospace division, and the Air France / KLM Group, the world's largest
air carrier group as measured by total revenue. Air France and KLM joined forces in mid-2004,
but each retains its own identity, sharing management and support functions.
KLM Engineering & Maintenance, a division of the KLM Royal Dutch Airlines operation, employs more than 5,000
people performing outsourced contract aircraft maintenance for more than 100 airlines worldwide.
KLM-E&M is on the web at www.klm-em.com.
KLM E&M has one of the world's largest CF6 engine shops, and have maintained over 6,000
CF6 engines since starting the programs in 1975.
The company maintains CF6-50, CF6-80A, CF6-80C2, CF6-80E, CFM56-3, CFM56-5, CFM56-7 and GE90
engines, modules, parts and accessories.
CF6 family engines are found on a wide variety of passenger and freight-carrying aircraft
worldwide, including most key Boeing and Airbus models. GE's history of the CF6 high-bypass ratio
turbofan engine is here.
Almost entirely unrelated to bearings, but appropriate for a year-end article, here
is a link to GE's very impressive interactive animations: How Jet Engines Work. You can build
and fly your engine. Or watch test videos, like the Hailstorm Ingestion Test.
