Sona Group Ltd. (India) announced it is reorganizing its joint venture operations / manufacturing. At the same time, the company revealed plans to aggressively expand bearing production and target Indian market original equipment manufacturers.

A joint venture, equally held, of Somic Ishikawa (Japan), ZF Lemdorfer (Germany), and Soma Group, the company will retain its current ownership structure.

The Sona Somic Lemdorfer Ltd. (SSL) business will absorb Sona Cold Forgings Ltd. (SCF); SSL's sales are approximately five times those of SCF, for a total of Rs 870 million (USD $19.3 million). But projections, said the company, paint a sales growth picture putting 2006 sales near Rs 1.2 billion ($26.6 million).

One of the reasons for that strong sales forecast is SSL's rapidly-growing rolling element bearing business.

Going into 2006, Sona Group has announced aggressive expansion plans for SSL's automotive-size ball bearing production capacity.

Sona said it is underway with plans to build a new ball bearing manufacturing facility in Gurgaon, on the outskirts of New Delhi, boosting SSL's production capacity by 2.5 million, to almost 7 million bearings per year.

The forging business will also see new investments, but at less than Rs 70 million ($1.5 million) by 2009.

SSL bearing customers currently include Indian vehicle manufacturers and OEM suppliers such as Sona Koyo Steering, Maruti Udyog Ltd., General Motors India, and Honda Siel.

Dr. Surinder Kupar, Sona Group Chairman, noted the growth in bearing sales, adding: "We are also diversifying into manufacturing ball bearings for light commercial vehicles and are in talks with major commercial vehicle manufacturers."
