FAG Confirms Expansion Plans for Hungary

FAG Automotive Hungary Kft (a subsidiary INA Holding Schaeffler KG, Germany) was forced to confirm it is planning a significant expansion in Hungary.

Debrecen Mayor Lajos Kosa recently made a public announcement that FAG planned to expand its plant in the industrial park there; the company followed shortly with its own confirmation.

FAG set up its Hungarian operations in 1999, address its need for a regional source of price-competitive automotive size (under 90mm OD) tapered roller bearings.

The Hungarian operation is essentially two businesses, FAG Components and FAG Automotive, but they operate in tandem.

Nearby, in the same industrial park, is Eurings Ltd. (a joint venture of FAG, Germany, and SIMEST, Italy), which supplies hot forged, annealed and sand blasted and rolled bearing rings to FAG Hungary. Eurings runs three shifts. Tsubaki Hoover has a bearing ball plant nearby, as do Dongwoo Kft. and Kaewoo MGM.

FAG's just-announced Debrecen expansion will be a new greenfield facility, 31,000 square meters (334,000 square feet) of manufacturing floorspace on a 122,000 square meter (30 acre) site.

The company said it expects to spend at least €40 million (USD $49 million) building out the new plant. Its production will focus on ball and roller bearings for automotive and light truck transmissions.

A Schaeffler Group sister company in Hungary, LUK Savaria Kft, manufactures automotive and light truck transmission and clutch assemblies. That facility, in operating since 1997, is also undergoing a major expansion effort.

Once the new Debrecen bearing manufacturing facility is complete, FAG's employment in that area will jump from its current level of just over 750 to more than 1,200.
