The front-engine / rear-drive vans are sold in many different markets as the Mazda Bongo, Nissan
Vanette and Mitsubishi Delica.
Mazda said the vans were built with front wheel hub assembly bearings which have a, "faulty structure"
which can fail, cause excessive drag and a host of problems, including, "engine stalling."
The same chassis had been recalled previously due to defective axle nuts which could fail
and lead to drivetrain disconnects and potential wheel-off situations.
Mazda builds the light commercial vans for other manufacturers for a variety of reasons.
In Mitsubishi's case, the volume of small commercial van sales was too low to justify updating
its own Delica, and it was unwilling to make the investment to bring it up to new 1999 crash test standards.
Mitsubishi's under-two-ton Delica is supplied by Mazda, while the heavy-duty Delica trucks
are still built by Mitsubishi.
