Durga Bearings Pvt. Ltd. (India), the Chennai-based distributor chain, is celebrating its 25th
year in business.
At the recent celebration, Founder and CEO Manoj Sultania said the company is now projecting
this fiscal year sales will reach Rs 550 million (USD $12.2 million), up from Rs 400 million ($8.2 million)
last year.
In addition, he said, Durga will be opening or expanding several more locations: Hyderabad, Coimbatore,
Delhi, Bangalore, and Kolkata. Durga currently has office across India, serving thousands of customers.
"We have decided to enhance our client base by reaching out to small industries and SMEs by understanding
their needs and initiating best ways to protect their interests by catering to their specific demands,"
said Durga executive P. Ganeshan.
Marketing Director, Deepak Sultania, added, "Our clients in the SSIs and SMEs are insignificant now,
as most of our sales are from big corporations. Also, most of the small industries were targets of spurious
[counterfeit and/or rebuilt sold as new] bearings from the unorganized sector, we have taken this new
initiative to focus on this sector."
At the same time, Durga signed an agreement with bearing manufacturer NSK Ltd. (Japan) to be their
key distributor and "channel partner" in India.
NSK and Durga have launched a so-called "road show," with four trucks called, "NSK-Durga Bearings Express,"
targeting India's most industrialized areas where small manufacturers are concentrated.
Mr. Sultania said, "Most of the small scale industries [SSIs] make use of spurious components. The road show
is an effort to spread awareness among the industries about the NSK brand."
NSK, with only a 3% market share in India, also does not have a manufacturing presence there. That may become
a problem if sales grow on schedule; many customers prefer India-made bearings, with 60% of India's bearing
demand going to domestic manufacturers.
The ball and roller bearing market in India remains strong; although slowing from recent highs, it is
still growing at a robust 6% to 7% per year.
Durga is not just involved with NSK; it imports and sells bearings from INA/FAG, Elges, Timken/Torrington,
SKF, NSK/RHP, Rollway, Gamet, McGill and others.
