NEI Bearing Investing
in Manufacturing Expansion

National Engineering Industries Ltd. (NEI, India, a division of GP-CK Birla Group, India) announced it will be spending more than Rs 1.0 billion (USD $21.8 million) to upgrade its Jaipur manufacturing facilities.

Founded in 1946 in Jaipur as National Bearing Co. Ltd., NEI has an array of ball and roller bearing manufacturing operations in Jaipur, along with a smaller 78,000 square foot ball bearing plant (built 1982) nearby in Gunsi.

When National Bearing Co. changed its name in 1958 to National Engineering Industries, it kept the NBC brand name -- why NEI bearings are still marketed under the NBC brand.

The company's earliest product lines were ball bearings and cylindrical roller bearings, produced with its first technical collaborator, the former Hoffman Manufacturing Company (UK, which became the H in RHP, later acquired by NSK).

NEI currently manufactures over 30 million bearings per year. Its product lineup is more than 500 sizes of ball and roller bearings, including rail bearings, ranging from 6mm bore to 2,000mm OD.

The company also manufactures steel balls in Jaipur, up to 25mm, using NTN equipment from Japan.

Both NTN (Japan) and Brenco (USA) are "technical partners" of NEI, providing technical expertise and as import/export buy/sell partners. Brenco, for example, has had a relationship with NEI since 1982 and recently given it a number of large orders for rail bearings. Federal-Mogul Corporation (USA) had been an earlier partner, and NEI still produces tapered roller bearings on equipment obtained from Federal-Mogul.

Marking sales of Rs 3.3 billion ($72.1 million) in 2003, NEI holds a 20% market share in India, second only to SKF India. Approximately 70% of NEI's sales are to original equipment manufacturers and 30% into the replacement market.

With the investment at Jaipur, NEI plans to expand both its domestic sales and pursue additional export market opportunities.
