Oiles Corporation (Japan) has launched pilot production at its new bearing manufacturing facility in Kadan, northwest Czech Republic.

Originally announced in mid-2003, the Kadan bearing plant has come online slightly ahead of schedule. It produces self-lubricating plastic and graphite bearings for the auto industry.

The Oiles plant is important to Kadan, a 13th century city of 17,000 inhabitants. At full capacity by 2008, the Oiles plant is expected to eventually employ over 200 people. It currently employs 35.

In Kadan, Oiles will eventually spend over € 7 million ($8.3 million) in three stages to build the new bearing factory. The final stage is scheduled for completion in 2007.

Founded in 1939, Oiles is a diversified manufacturing and engineering company headquartered in Tokyo. Its primary business is Oiles Bearing, a world leader in self-lubricating bearings. The company employs approximately 1,000 people in 15 subsidiaries worldwide.

It is a primary supplier of bearings and seals to Japanese automakers such as Toyota, Honda, and Nissan.

Choosing Kadan, Oiles was drawn not only by government-backed assistance and subsidy packages, but also by Kadan's physical proximity to Oiles' important customer base of European auto manufacturers.
