NTN Corporation (Japan) has signed an agreement with China's Changzhou Guangyang Bearing Co. Ltd., establishing a joint venture to manufacture and sell bearings in China.

The new company, Changzhou NTN-Guangyang Corporation, is building a facility in Changzhou City, Jiangsu Province. It will focus on manufacturing automotive-size ball and roller bearings, and needle roller bearings. China's fast-growing lineup of automobile manufacturers and their suppliers is the venture's target market.

In late 2003, NTN announced its intention to form joint ventures in China, and specifically named Changzhou Guangyang as a partner, although the business was to have been established by February 2004.

Changzhou Guangyang (formerly Changzhou Needle Bearing Factory) is the parent company of NRB China bearings, and has for many years been a major supplier of ball and roller bearings to the automobile, light truck, and heavy truck manufacturers operating in China. The company manufactures needle roller, cylindrical roller, clutch release bearings and four-point contact ball bearings. NRB also manufactures balls and rollers.

Beyond the auto industry, NRB bearings are used in manufacturing and industrial equipment, textile mills, diesel and gasoline generators, office equipment and household appliances.

The new Changzhou NTN-Guangyang business ownership is split 51% to NTN, which will maintain management control, and 49% to Changzhou Guangyang.

In the 355,000 square foot facility, the partners expect to spend more than USD $28 million. By the time it is fully online -- projected for 2008 -- it will employ more than 1,300 people and produce more than 78 million bearings worth $97 million.

Disclosing the venture's production will eventually find its way beyond China's borders, NTN said, "The joint venture aims to meet the developing local sourcing needs of China-based auto producers by manufacturing and marketing products expected to see demand growth, such as needle roller bearings, cylindrical roller bearings and clutch release bearings. In addition to helping expand automotive bearing business in China, NTN will use the joint venture as a base for global bearing supply."
