SKF AB (Sweden), the world's largest bearing company, announced it has formally opened its new factory in Shanghai, China. This is SKF's fifth Chinese production facility.

The facility, SKF Shanghai Bearings Co. Ltd., is a joint venture between SKF (60% ownership) and Shanghai Bearing Group Co. Ltd. (40% ownership). SKF will have full management responsibility.

eBearing reported on the new business being formed back in July 2001, although the business was not formally established until 2002.

• SKF and Shanghai Bearing form joint venture in China

The venture is SKF's second with Shanghai Bearing Group Co. The first SKF - Shanghai Bearing joint venture, SKF Automotive Bearings Co. Ltd., was established in 1995.

The facility is compact, announced at only 9,000 square feet, employing state-of-the art production equipment to achieve that efficiency. Eventually, the plant will employ over 200 workers and taken an investment of over USD $11.5 million.

SKF Shanghai will produce deep groove ball bearings in a variety of sizes and variations, primarily for use in electric motors and household appliances.

Three of the plant's six planned production lines are already in place. They were recently put online at full production, after part approval from SKF's engineering and quality control in Sweden.

SKF Shanghai is located in the Pudong Development Zone, and not the only foreign-controlled bearing company in the immediate area. In 1997, General Bearing Company (USA) built the Shanghai Pudong General Bearing Company in the Kangqiao Industrial Development Zone. Shanghai WSW Bearing Company, Shanghai Luhong Bearing, Shanghai Superoll, Cixing Group, and others, are in the same area.
