NSK Franklin

A somewhat unusual event, in this day of plant closings and reorganizations, saw NSK Ltd. (Japan) marking the tenth anniversary of its NSK America Corp. plant in Franklin, Indiana with a celebration and ceremony there.

The Franklin Ball Screw and Automotive Hub Manufacturing Plant has been in operation since 1993. Employing approximately 350 people, the plant manufactures ball screws for positioning purposes in semiconductor manufacturing equipment, and automotive hub units, primarily for Toyota, Honda, DaimlerChrysler, Nissan and General Motors.

It is not NSK's only facility in the area; the company has a component manufacturing plant in Liberty, Indiana. And two years ago, NSK opened a new 136,000 square foot warehouse 20 miles north in Indianapolis, primarily to service Toyota facilities. In all, NSK has nine facilities in the United States.

As Franklin celebrated with NSK, however, ArvinMeritor (USA) announced it will be closing its Light Vehicle Systems exhaust plant in Franklin by September 2004. ArvinMeritor is Franklin's and the county's largest employer; almost 850 people will be losing their jobs as the LVS division reorganizes and work is shifted to other facilities.
