Timken Targets Ukraine, Eastern European Markets

The Timken Company (USA) plans aggressive sales growth in eastern Europe, supported by a push to strengthen
distribution and warehousing networks in the region, according to eBearing sources.
The focus on eastern Europe is not surprising; every major bearing manufacturer has been
actively strengthening its presence there, through both direct investments and local partnerships.
The region offers low production costs, pockets of underemployed but skilled workers, and local governments
actively seeking foreign investment amid aggressive privatization efforts. On the sales side of
the equation, the region offers the promise of rapidly developing demand for high-quality bearings
but yet which is still not saturated. Demand is expected to increase as more internationally
diverse manufacturing operations are attracted to the area.

In the Ukraine, sources told eBearing that Timken expects a fivefold sales increase
in the next two years -- targeting growth from today's USD $1 million to $5 million by 2005.
Currently, Timken is growing its network in eastern Europe, including three distribution points
in Russia -- Moscow, Magnitogorsk, and Novotroitsk -- but it has no formal arrangements
in Ukraine, Belarus, Estonia, Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan, all of which are still handled by Timken Romania.
