Timken Lands First Major Consolidated Contract

The Timken Company (USA) announced it has received two major orders from VAI Industries UK Ltd., totaling more than USD $2.5 million.

VAI's orders mark a key milestone for Timken on its journey to fully integrate the recently-acquired Torrington. Both VAI and Timken acknowledge the buying decision was heavily influenced by Timken's newfound ability to offer a broader package. Andrew MacDonald, VAI's GM-Procurement, said, "The Torrington acquisition enabled Timken to competitively offer VAI the entire package. The combined capability of the new organization influenced VAI's decision in awarding Timken this business."

More important than the contract itself is that it acts as an example Timken can display to the world as an answer to skeptics who questioned the value of the Torrington acquisition. Internally, Timken and Torrington associates now can see how the acquisition works to leverage important synergies and customer development potential. Skeptical customers can now be shown how the combined organization's capabilities benefit, rather than restrict, them. Finally, Timken can use the obvious PR value of the contract as a showcase for Wall Street analysts.

VAI UK is a subsidiary of Voest-Alpine Industrieanlagenbau (Austria); the package of tapered, cylindrical and ball bearings are destined for two plants in China. Southwest Aluminum is receiving bearings for a hot rolling mill in Chongqing Province, and Public Zone Company in Guangdong Province will use bearings for a cold-roll anneal and pickle line. Timken said the orders include rolling mill bearings up to 900mm ID, weighing more than 6,000 lbs.

Timken and Torrington sales and application teams from four countries -- England, France, Romania and the USA -- worked on the project.

The bearings will be sourced primarily from two facilities, although five are involved. The large sphericals and cylindricals will come from Timken Romania in Ploiesti, representing about 75% of the order. Torrington's large U.S. plant in Tyger River, South Carolina, will have the majority of the remaining work.

Christopher Coughlin, Timken VP-Industrial, said, "This truly was an integrated team effort in securing the new business. Our associates' knowledge and experience -- combined with our broader line of products and services -- was a major factor in delivering VAI the right solution for its upcoming projects."
