Oiles Corporation (Japan) announced it is the first company committed to building in a newly
designated industrial zone in Kadan, northwest Czech Republic. A 13th century city of approximately
17,000 people, Kadan is a target of the Czech Republic's effort to attract
foreign manufacturing investment.
Founded in 1952, Oiles is a diversified manufacturing and engineering company headquartered in Tokyo.
Its primary business is Oiles Bearing, a world leader in self-lubricating bearings. The company
employs approximately 1,000 people in 15 subsidiaries worldwide.
In Kadan, Oiles will spend approximately € 7 million (USD $8.3 million) to build a new
bearing factory, scheduled to come online by late 2004. Oiles said it expects employment
in the Kadan facility will eventually reach 100 people.
The company said it chose Kadan not only because of the assistance and subsidy packages offered
by the government, but also because of Kadan's proximity to its European customer base of
auto manufacturers.
Oiles manufactures bearings with graphite, polyacetyl, sintered and tetrafluoroethylene surfaces
on a wide variety of base materials, producing an extensive product lineup for rotating and
linear motion applications.
Oiles bearings are used in everything from small precision machine tools to industrial equipment
to automotive applications to the pivot of the world's first floating, rotating highway bridge
in Osaka. One of those rotating bridge bearings weighs over 16,200kg.
Other applications include food processing, cigarette manufacturing and environmentally-sensitive
areas where eliminating the potential for oil contamination is a key design parameter.
Oiles has a U.S. arm, Oiles America Corp., headquartered in Plymouth, Michigan. Oiles America is
a key Tier 1 automotive supplier with a factory in Concord, North Carolina.
Worldwide, Oiles claims 892 patents and 354 trademarks, primarily related to its bearing businesses.
Oiles sales in fiscal 2001 were ¥46.6 billion ($396 million), but for the fiscal year just
ended, the company is projecting sales of only ¥38.8 billion ($329.5 million) due to the
worldwide manufacturing slowdown.
