copyright © 2001 eBearing Inc.
The Torrington Company (Torrington, Connecticut), a division of
Ingersoll-Rand Corporation, cut 50 more jobs last week, raising the
total to 340 employees eliminated so far in 2001.
Torrington manufactures bearings under the Torrington, Kilian
and Fafnir brands. The company was founded in 1866, and still keeps
its corporate headquarters in Torrington, Connecticut.
They currently employ approximately 10,000 workers in 20
manufacturing plants and 50 offices throughout the world.
After this past week's layoffs, employment at the corporate
headquarters has fallen below 1,000.
In April, Torrington cut 180 positions, 60 of which were
salary positions, primarily in the automotive division.

Last week's cutback was all salary positions, 25 in the company's
Torrington, Connecticut headquarters and 25 at other locations.
Some layoffs came in the general staff and the remainder from
industrial bearings. Automotive bearings, which has already been
hard hit by layoffs this year, was not cut any further.
Donald Bodell, Vice President - Industrial, said, "This has been
a challenging year for our division and the entire company, and we
have to adjust to the current economic realities.
While we have been working hard to reduce
inventory and costs, I regret we can no longer avoid taking
action to balance our employment level with current and projected
conditions."
