Stephen Perry, Senior VP of Human Resources at The Timken Company (Canton, Ohio)
is likely to be approved shortly as head of the General Services
Administration in the new Bush administration.
President Bush announced on Wednesday, March 21st, that he would be nominating
Mr. Perry for GSA Administrator. No difficulties are expected in the Senate
confirmation process.
Mr. Perry's competition for the nomination had been William Coleman, GSA
Commissioner of Public Buildings Service under former President George Bush, Sr.
Mr. Perry had been Ohio's State Director of Administrative Services under former
Governor George Voinovich in the early 1990's.
Ex-Governor Voinovich is now Senator Voinovich, and has been pushing the Bush
administration to consider Perry for a number of top posts. Voinovich is on the
Government Affairs Committee and sits on the nomination review panel.
Spokesman for Senator Voinovich, Scott Milburn, said, "The Senator thinks he
would be an asset to the administration in personnel management type issues."
"He is a great asset to GSA and federal government overall because he understands
not only the rules, regulations and management side of the job, but also the
people side of the job."
When Mr. Perry is confirmed, Washington will have two Timken executives in its
ranks. Tim Timken is Chairman of the National Association of Manufacturers, a
Washington-based trade group which represents the interests of U.S. manufacturers.
