Friction Management Services has been formed as a joint venture of The Timken Company (Canton, Ohio) and Tranergy Corporation. Friction Management's direction is to market a new wheel friction management system, TracGlide™ for the railroad industry. Tranergy patented the technology and Timken brings the market access.

TracGlide™ is a computerized system which monitors all factors of the train's position, speed, brake status, track conditions and temperature. Then the system dispenses the calculated friction modifier - making the track slipperier or stickier - to both rails after the last axle of the locomotive.

The system dispenses friction reducers while the train is moving and friction enhancers under braking. The proprietary friction modifiers are water-based and dissipate as the rail cars pass over it.

Tranergy's President, Dr. Sudhir Kumar, indicated that the system has been in test for three years under many varying conditions on major U.S. railroads, demonstrating fuel savings as high as 42%, with over 5% productivity gains. The system lowers fuel costs, increases productivity, reduces wheel and rail wear and fatigue as well as increasing the "hunting threshold" which reduces the critical vibration component of rail wheel life and service intervals.
