SKF Announces New Railroad Bearings and Systems at InnoTrans

At InnoTrans, the international railway trade show in Berlin, SKF (Goteborg, Sweden) announced a new railroad wheel
bearing with built-in electronic monitoring components in a system developed in conjunction with Secheron (Switzerland).
The unit uses a Scheron data acquisition unit to capture speed, temperature and vibration data sent by sensors built
into the bearing unit.
SKF claims the design is unique in that the vibration signal is used to build a component condition history and warn
of impending bearing or wheel problems. even warning if derailment conditions are present.
SKF is also showing their first Compact TBU tapered bearing unit for railway wheels at InnoTrans.
The company's other product launch involves new hybrid bearings for electric traction motors. By using ceramic rolling
elements (previously only employed in aircraft bearings), SKF was able to build bearings which are electrically
insulated. Bearing races become pitted when tiny sparks from induced current arc from the rolling elements to the races;
because the ceramic parts do not conduct electricity, there is no pitting and the bearing life is greatly extended.
