Subaru of America, Inc., (Cherry Hill, New Jersey) a division of Fuji Heavy Industries,
has issued a recall notice for 1,977 model year 2001 Legacy vehicles built during
August 2000. The recall includes Legacy L, GT and Outback models.
This recall involves the casting for the right front bearing housing. Numerous flaws have
been found in castings marked with lot number OF15. If the housing fails, it can cause
wheel bearing failure, or loss of grease from the wheel bearing which will cause
wheel bearing failure. If the casting fails at the tie rod end attachment point, there
will be loss of steering control.
Subaru said it knows of no accidents or injuries resulting from the problems. The
bearing housing recall is part of a larger recall involving a total of 3,801 Legacies.
Subaru said it believes most of the vehicles are still in inventory. 388 were recalled
for problems with rear seat belt webbing and 1,456 for fuel hoses which can fail in low
temperatures.
