Timken Says Remember the Old Economy Drives the New Economy

In Denver last week, Tim Timken, Chairman of the National Association of Manufacturers,
said Wall Street would do well to remember that the so-called New Economy is actually
driven by the Old Economy.
"There is only one new economy, and we are part of it. One of our concerns is
that manufacturing is not getting a fair shake," he said.
Timken went on to point out that when investors divide the Old Economy and New
Economy, they fail to realize that technology companies such as Dell Computer
are actually manufacturing companies. And that manufacturing companies spend about
60% of all the money spent on leading-edge technology R&D.
Finally, technology companies themselves would not have grown if manufacturers
had not been investing heavily in their products. Manufacturers have been investing
heavily in technology, with manufacturing productivity increasing over the past
five years at nearly twice the rate found in the rest of the economy.
