Russian news agencies are reporting that fire destroyed a large section of a ball bearing
plant in northeastern Moscow.
The fire started in mid-morning, but was out of control within only a few minutes.
Then bottles with acid stored in them began to explode inside the factory.
Due to acids and other hazardous materials on the site, firemen were not able
to enter the building, but instead poured water in the windows and doors. The roof and
walls collapsed in several places. Residents and shop customers were evacuated
from the area.
The section of the factory building involved in the fire reportedly covers at least
500,000 square feet.
Fire response authorities report that it took over 3 hours to control the blaze; no
injuries were reported.
