Vandervell, Tony
Credited with the development, in 1939, of the journal bearing using
a cast copper-lead-indium shell.
Vaughn, Philip
Credited with the first patent of a modern style ball bearing,
issued in 1791 in Carmarthen.
Vickers Hardness
A reference standard.
Also known as the Diamond Pyramid Hardness Number (DPHN).
A measurement of the indentation created in a material when a
standardized 136-degree-angle pyramid-shaped
diamond stylus is applied under a specific pressure.
Volvo
Swedish automaker which got its name from a defunct automotive bearing division of SKF AB.
Latin for "I roll".
SKF registered Volvo as a brand name in 1915, for automotive bearings. It was abandoned
in 1920 when SKF standardized on one brand.
In 1924, two SKF employees, Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson, left the company to
begin manufacturing automobiles. Gabrielsson had been head of SKF France and Larson an engineer.
SKF funded the company enough to produce 1,000 vehicles in 1927. It also contributed
the now-defunct Volvo AB corporate identity and a disused manufacturing plant in Hisingen.
SKF and Volvo split in 1935.
