L
Ledeburite
See also austenite and cementite.
Named for Adolf Ledebur (1837-1916), who in 1882 discovered the iron/carbon microcrystalline structure.
The iron/carbon system eutectic, the constituents of which are austenite and cementite.
Austenite decomposes into ferrite and cementite when cooled below the temperature at
which transformation of austenite to ferrite or ferrite plus cementite is completed.
Light Bearing
Bearings that are narrower and/or have smaller outside diameters
than standard series bearings of the same bore sizes.
Light series bearings are generally used to allow large shafts to
fit small housings or small housings to hold large shafts. This is
possible only when the loading is not severe.
Load Rating
A reference standard. Also known as Dynamic Operating Capacity.
For most ball and roller bearings, the standard definition of dynamic
operating capacity is: the maximum load a bearing can carry for 1 million
inner-race revolutions with a 90% assurance the bearing will survive.
Lubricant
A bearing lubricant has four functions:
- lubricate the rolling and moving surfaces
- act as a protectant against corrosion
- conduct and transfer heat evenly
- inhibit contaminants from entering the bearing
