Gas Bearing
A particular journal bearing variation. In place of oil or other liquid-type lubricant, pressurized gasses are used.

The advantage of gas bearings is that operating speeds and temperature variations can be much higher than with traditionally lubricated bearings. However, gas bearings generally have lower load-bearing capacities.

Gonio Way
A type of linear motion bearing which is curved to describe the arc of a pendulum.

GPZ -- Russia's State Bearing Plants
Russia began manufacturing bearings in the 1920's. The final bearing manufacturing facility built by the former Soviet Union was GPZ-28 in Lutsk, completed in 1981. Like many plants, Lutsk initially produced a wide range but later had its production narrowed, in this case to bearings under 500mm OD.

The first bearing manufacturing plant in Russia was Sharikopodshipnik SKF, built in Moscow by SKF.
  • GPZ-1 The first Soviet-built bearing manufacturing plant, Moscow, came online in 1932
    • State-issued production order 1 is known as Decree 193, issued March 29, 1932.
    • The first order was for bearings for the Stalingrad Tractor Plant.
  • GPZ-2 Shabolovskij; former SKF bearing manufacturing plant, built in 1916, nationalized in 1932
  • GPZ-3 Saratov (retooled with secondhand INA equipment)
  • GPZ-4 Kuibyshev/Samara
  • GPZ-5 Tomsk
  • GPZ-6 Sverdlovsk
  • GPZ-8 Kharkov
  • GPZ-9 Samara (up to 2000mm OD)
  • GPZ-10 Rostov
  • GPZ-11 Minsk
  • GPZ-13 Izhevsk bearing plant (1956), now IPZ - Izhevsky Podshipnikovy Zavod
  • GPZ-14
  • GPZ-15 Volzhsky (automotive)
  • GPZ-16 Stepnogorsk (rail)
  • GPZ-18
  • GPZ-19 Shavat (instrument)
  • GPZ-20 Kursk
  • GPZ-21 Vologda
  • GPZ-22 Gagestanskiye Ogni (subcontractor to GPZ-3)
  • GPZ-23 Vologda (automotive)
  • GPZ-24 Penza
  • GPZ-26 Markhamat (large ball bearings)
  • GPZ-27 Akhunbabayev
  • GPZ-28 Lutsk (up to 500mm OD)
  • GPZ-29 (instrument)
  • GPZ-30 Leninsk affiliate of GPZ-9 (spherical roller)
  • GPZ-31 Samara, est. 1990; miniature bearings from GPZ-4; now Miniature Bearings Factory

Graphitic Corrosion
A type of deterioration or decay which occurs in gray cast iron products such as bearing housings.

The selective leaching of metallic constituents or their conversion to corrosion products, leaving the graphite intact.
